2020 UEFA European Championship & Copa America Postponed Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

2020 UEFA European Championship & Copa America Postponed Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it has been confirmed that the 2020 UEFA European Championship and Copa America tournaments have both been postponed.

On Tuesday, UEFA convened a meeting to discuss the ongoing crisis brought about by the coronavirus outbreak, and to formulate a plan to accommodate domestic and continental football competitions in Europe alongside the upcoming European Championship.

Norway's Football Association was the first to confirm that the European football governing body has decided that Euro 2020 will not proceed at the end of the season as planned, but will instead be postponed by a year. The rescheduled tournament will now take place between 11 June and 11 July 2021.

UEFA have since released an official statement in which they confirmed that the decision was made to protect the wellbeing of all those involved and that it would allow for the continent's domestic competitions to be completed once they resumed from suspension.

"The health of all those involved in the game is the priority, as well as to avoid placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services involved in staging matches. The move will help all domestic competitions, currently on hold due to the Covid-19 emergency, to be completed," part of the statement read.

It has also been confirmed that the South American equivalent of the competition, the Copa America, and the 2021 UEFA Women's European Championship had also been postponed for a year in line with the co-ordinated decision with UEFA.

"I would also like to thank Alejandro Dominguez and CONMEBOL, who have agreed to move CONMEBOL's 2020 Copa America in order to follow the recommendations issued by the international public health organisations to enact extreme measures and as a result of Euro 2020 being postponed," the statement continued.

"This means that clubs and leagues in Europe will have as little disruption as possible in the availability of their players. These joint efforts, and especially this co-ordinated and responsible decision, are deeply appreciated by the whole European football community."
