Over 400 000 people worldwide have contracted the fast-spreading virus that first appeared in Wuhan, China, in January, with more than 18 000 people dying from the disease or due to complications from it.

While most news publications across the globe seem to only be reporting on the negatives surrounding COVID-19, there are a number of grand and kind gestures being made by some of our favourite football people.

On Tuesday evening, it was reported by The National that both Messi and Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola made donations of €1 million (R18 million) to different organisations to help halt the spread of the virus.

It is claimed the FC Barcelona captain gave money to a clinic in the city of Barcelona, as well as to a medical centre in his country of birth, Argentina.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo is believed to have donated money towards medical equipment for a hospital in Portugal, while former Manchester United and England right-back Gary Neville closed his hotel to the public to let hospital staff and key workers to stay in for free while they fight the virus.

These caring gestures have come in the wake of football being brought to a lockdown by the threatening illness, with all of Europe's top five leagues currently suspended until further notice. To see how more of football's biggest names have contributed, click through the gallery above!
