On Saturday night, the Citizens finally reached the summit of European football when they beat Inter Milan 1-0 to win the UEFA Champions League.
As a result, they became only the second English side ever to win the treble, and while their Premier League and FA Cup triumphs were achieved with their Belgian playmaker fit and firing, this past weekend the Mancunians had to overcome the Nerazzurri without the 31-year-old from the 36th minute of the decider.
The former Chelsea man had to leave a Champions League final injured for a second time in his career after a hamstring issue forced him off in the 36th minute at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on the weekend – he had to do similar in the 2020/21 final against Chelsea, going off for concussion following a challenge in the 60th minute.
After the game, the Belgium international revealed that he had been dealing with ruptures to that muscle since they faced Bayern Munich earlier in the competition.
"I've been struggling for two months, since the Bayern Munich away game," he told members of the media, as per 90min.
"They were all small ruptures but today I snapped it all the way so I wasn't able to go on.
"I've been told for two months there's a possibility I was at risk but, you know, you take it. I try to be available for my team and I know with the type of player I am there is sometimes a possibility with all the power and the type of runs I make and the intensity with which I play that I put my body on the line.

"But that's fine. I do everything to win the game. And sometimes it's hard. In the final, the hamstring just snapped."
