Ex-French President Slams Mbappe Over PSG Exit

Ex-French President Slams Mbappe Over PSG Exit

A former president of France has criticised Kylian Mbappe for the way in which he left Paris Saint-Germain.

The France captain is now a Real Madrid star after a drawn-out transfer saga involving the Spanish giants and the Ligue 1 juggernauts.

The Bondy native has already scored six goals in eight appearances for Los Blancos, but some are seemingly still disgruntled at the fact that he left the Parc des Princes.

When his PSG contract was soon to expire in 2022 and rumours intensified regarding a mooted move to the Santiago Bernabeu, it was reported that French president Emmanuel Macron called the speedy winger to try to convince him to stay with Les Parisiens.

That seemed to have worked back then as he extended his stay, but now that Mbappe has finally chosen to sign for the record European champions, another former head of state has had his say on the protracted saga.

Nicolas Sarkozy served as the president of France between 2007 and 2012, and is also understood to be a big PSG fan. He claims that while the desire to seek new challenges is understandable, the way in which Mbappe did so in particular is questionable.

"Kylian gave seven years to the club – you can't forget that. He gave us extraordinary emotions," Sarkozy told Le Parisien.

"He illustrates what we always see as a temptation; we always think that the grass is greener on the other side.

"I can understand that he wanted to leave. I understand his dream, but I find it more difficult to understand the way in which he carried it out, but it's his choice."

PSG and Mbappe are also still embroiled in a legal dispute concerning an alleged €55 million (R1 billion) that the latter is owed, with the matter set to go to court after the club appealed a decision ruling that they have to pay the French forward the money owed.
