Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has issued a public apology after he recorded himself and some of his teammates singing a song that has been labelled as racist by the French Football Federation (FFF).
In a statement released on Wednesday, FFF president Philippe Diallo called for action to be taken against the player and his colleagues, who sang lyrics that read: "They play for France, but their parents are from Angola. Their mother is from Cameroon, while their father is from Nigeria. But their passport says French."
This came almost two years after the Albiceleste beat Les Bleus in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar.
The Blues have since said they are conducting an internal investigation into the matter, with FIFA also looking into the issue that has left Fernandez's French club teammates furious, according to reports.
While it is unclear as to whether or not Messi took part in singing along with his compatriots, Argentina's sports sub-secretary Julio Garro has called for an apology from the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia.
"The national team captain must also come out to apologise for this case," he said on radio, according to FTBL.
"The same (for the) AFA president. I think it is appropriate. It leaves us as a country in a bad position, with so much glory."

Reports have suggested that Fernandez's French Chelsea colleagues have unfollowed him on social media, with the latest news claiming the 23-year-old has privately apologised to his Blues teammates.
