The Argentinian famously played under the Spanish tactician for four years at the Catalan giants, during which Messi scored a remarkable 211 goals in 219 appearances and the club collected 14 trophies.
Guardiola has often credited his former player for being massively influential in the success he enjoyed at Barcelona, while Messi, along with his ex-teammates, has said the Spaniard's tactical mindset changed their outlook on the game.
The manager's possession-based philosophy saw the Blaugrana relentlessly dominate teams throughout that four-year period, a style that has since been mimicked by coaches around the world at all levels.
Speaking recently about his former boss, however, Messi suggested that Guardiola's footprint on the sport has created a lack of certainty for youth coaches and younger players.
"The Guardiola era has caused a bit of confusion," he said in an interview with Clank Media.
"Everyone wants to play like that now. They tell six-/seven-year-olds to play with two touches, quickly.
"At that age, what happened with me needs to happen for these kids… we shouldn't take away their spontaneity."
