Such is the Rosario native’s stature in the beautiful game that he holds a number of illustrious records in football. In the early hours of Monday morning, the diminutive attacker etched his name into the history books once again, this time for the American outfit Inter Miami.
Messi scored the Herons’ solitary goal in their 1-1 draw against Toronto FC, and not only was that his third successive goal in the top flight, but it also marked his 44th goal contribution for the Florida-based side in the league since arriving.
This makes the La Albiceleste captain the club’s all-time top goal contributor, surpassing his compatriot and former international teammate Gonzalo Higuaín, who scored and assisted a combined total of 43 goals for the David Beckham co-owned side, according to statistics page 433.
Although the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has struggled with fitness in the early stages of the new MLS campaign, it has not stopped him from contributing in a major way to the team’s attack. In the eight matches Messi has played for Javier Mascherano’s side in all competitions, the 37-year-old has amassed six goals and two assists.
