Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Anthony Martial's goal return last season has "conned" people into thinking he is an "actual centre-forward".
The former Red Devils midfielder, who has been highly critical of the Manchester club at times since his retirement, believes United are short of true No. 9s.
The team is facing a dilemma ahead of their clash against Newcastle United, with Martial out for three games due to his red card against Tottenham Hotspur, but Scholes feels there is a deeper problem.
"These forwards are exceptionally talented lads. We all know that," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.
"The problem with United's forwards is that none of them is an actual centre-forward.
"Martial almost conned us into thinking he was one at the end of last season because he scored so many goals and was quite good.
"He's started this season quite poorly again, which makes you think he isn't. It's misleading."
Scholes also assessed the signing of Edinson Cavani, saying he does not think the Uruguayan will take the club to the next level.
"Five, six years ago, yeah, he (Cavani) is a great signing, he'll take us on to that next level possibly," he added.
"But I just don't think he'll take us to the next level now."
