The Premier League transfer window shut last week Monday, but United are reportedly already working on new deals and have drawn up a three-man shortlist to improve their defence.
The Red Devils have conceded 11 goals in their first three Premier League games of the season, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be keen to add a proven centre-back to his squad as a result.
According to The Athletic, United have now added James Tarkowski to their list of transfer targets.
The Burnley defender joins Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly and RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano on the club's reported wish list.
Tarkowski, 27, is considered a cheaper alternative to Koulibaly, while Upamecano could become available for just €42 million (R820 million) after the 2020/21 campaign, thanks to a buyout clause in his contract.

Napoli are believed to want as much as €90 million (R1.76 billion) for Koulibaly, and it is understood that Manchester City tried unsuccessfully to lower the Serie A side's asking price in the recent window.
Burnley, meanwhile, are likely to hold out for a figure of €55 million (R1.07 billion) for Tarkowski, so it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Devils can convince any of the three defenders to join them in the near future.
