According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are still keeping a close eye on Benfica and Portugal centre-back Antonio Silva.
The 20-year-old has made a significant impression since being promoted to his club's senior set-up in 2022, having made 61 appearances and earned seven international caps since.
Romano reports that the 20-time English champions have had scouts paying attention to his development amid manager Erik ten Hag's wish to strengthen his backline.
Retired France international Raphael Varane, meanwhile, faces an uncertain future in Manchester after recently losing his place in the side to England's Harry Maguire.
To add to the club's reported interest in Silva, last season's Carabao Cup winners are said to have also been monitoring 23-year-old Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, who was formerly on the books of Barcelona.
The centre-back has been crucial to the French side's efforts in Ligue 1 this season, having help them keep nine clean sheets in the 11 league games he has played this term.
