Paris Saint-Germain remain six points behind the Ligue 1 leaders, after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Marseille on Sunday evening.
Blaise Matuidi was dropped to the bench, as PSG started with Adrien Rabiot and Marco Verratti in the midfield.
The Ligue 1 champions dominated the opening exchanges but were finding it hard to break the down the visitors' defence.
PSG's first real opening arrived after 35 minutes when Di Maria's free-kick found Cavani, who headed over from close range.
However, despite the home side's dominance in the first half, the score remained goalless at the break. While, Marseille failed to mount any serious attempts at goal.
The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, which prompted Unai Emery to introduce Matuidi for Verratti on the hour mark.
PSG pushed for an opening goal and went close after 69 minutes when Cavani 's header sailed inches over the crossbar.
Cavani squandered another chance to break the deadlock in the 83rd minute, as the Uruguayan striker failed to hit the target from four-yards out.
The Ligue 1 champions pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages. but were unable to bypass a stubborn Marseille defence.
