Although it has been widely reported that the Blaugrana are facing major economic issues, the situation seems to be worse than initially feared.
According to Goal, the LaLiga giants cannot officially register any of their new signings – Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Emerson Royal – as the club has exceeded the league's strict salary limit.
This could explain the delay in offering Lionel Messi a new contract after the 34-year-old's previous deal expired last month, technically leaving him a free agent.
It is thought, though, that Barcelona are hopeful he will sign a new contract, but are currently unable to meet his demands given the financial crisis they are in.

To remedy this, the club has seemingly begun a major transfer window clearout, with four players having already left and more players expected to follow.
With Jean-Clair Todibo, Juan Miranda, Konrad de la Fuente and Matheus Fernandes all having left Barca permanently ahead of next season, Junior Firpo, Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho and Miralem Pjanic face uncertain futures.
