The retired defender played alongside Ronaldo six years, winning nine trophies in their time together before the Portuguese joined Real Madrid in 2009.
The Red Devils have already let go of Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Nani, and are reportedly still looking for fire-power upfront.
They signed Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Ferdinand is suggesting that they should go after their former star next.
He said on Twitter: "What about tempting this guy to come back?!" His post was accompanied by an Instagram link to six photos of Ferdinand and Ronaldo during his United days.
Ronaldo has never hidden his affection for his former club, but a return this transfer window seems unlikely - after he previously stated that he is happy at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese scored 313 goals in 300 official games for Los Blancos, and is only 10 goals behind the club's all-time record, which was set by Raul.
