The Dutchman admitted that the Spanish goalkeeper wants to leave Old Trafford and make to the move to the Spanish capital.
However, according to AS, negotiations could be drawing to a close after Van Gaal requested that club sell De Gea before the end of the transfer window.
The Red Devils have already brought in Argentina international goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, on a three-year deal, as Victor Valdez looks set to leave club after only a few months.
AS also suggest that there are certain personalities at Man United that would like the club to retain the services of the 24-year-old shot-stopper for one more year and let him leave for free next season.
United wanted to include Los Blancos defender, Sergio Ramos, in the deal, however the defender has reportedly agreed to a new deal at the club.
However, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid will bring in De Gea, having already acquired the services of Kiko Casilla, while Keylor Navas is also on the club's books.
