The Red Devils' chiefs had reportedly hoped to lure Ronaldo back to his former club following the uneasy start to his relationship with Rafael Benitez.
Old Trafford's bosses had not given up hope on luring the Portuguese back to England, but it seems they will now look elsewhere.
Louis van Gaal already indicated that it would be difficult for United to match Real's valuation of the superstar and new reports in English media claim Los Blancos want £84.5 million for Ronaldo.
United had reportedly hoped for a fee of around £60 million, and are not prepared to spend that much money, which would be £4.5 million more than Real paid for him in 2009. The £84.5 million price-tag seems too much for United, particularly considering Ronaldo's age.
