Reigning European champions Liverpool will go in search of a first-ever world title when their 2019 FIFA Club World Cup campaign gets under way on Wednesday, and the Reds' star African duo of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will be looking to grab a piece of history for themselves along the way.
Liverpool's pursuit of the elusive Club World Cup trophy begins on Wednesday, when the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League winners take on CONCACAF champions Monterrey in Qatar for a spot in the showpiece final.
Mane and Salah are expected to lead the attacking line for Jurgen Klopp's side, and both African superstars could claim a piece of history for themselves with a prolific goalscoring performance at the tournament.
If either Mane or Salah scores four or more goals across Liverpool's two matches (semi-final and final/third-place play-off), they will become the tournament's highest-scoring African player of all time.
That honour is currently held by Salah's countryman Mohamed Aboutrika, who scored four goals in 11 appearances in the competition, including three at the 2006 edition where he ended as the tournament's leading goalscorer.
In order to surpass the four-time CAF Team of the Year representee, Mane and Salah would need to match ex-Red Luis Suarez's record for the most goals at a single tournament, which he achieved after scoring five times for FC Barcelona during the 2015 edition of the showpiece.
Al-Sadd's prolific Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah, who was the world's leading goalscorer in 2018, and Esperance striker Hamdou Elhouni, who scored a hat-trick in the fifth-place play-off, both narrowly missed out on the record after scoring three goals each at this year's tournament.
