After club legend Xavi Hernandez was linked with the FC Barcelona managerial post last month, reports have now emerged suggesting that attempts were also made to bring Andres Iniesta back to the club in a playing role.
However, the deal, which was already complicated by the fact that the 35-year-old has two years remaining on his contract and is the captain of the Japanese outfit, was reportedly rejected outright.
The Daily Mail, who cited the same report, has claimed that Barca sought Iniesta's return in an attempt to "restore the club's values", a statement that is consistent with the Blaugrana's reported attempt to hire Xavi as manager.
A move to appoint Xavi ultimately failed, which resulted in former Real Betis manager Quique Setien securing the top job following Ernesto Valverde's sacking.
Iniesta, who began his career with Barca, made 674 appearances during his spell with the club, and spent three seasons as club captain.
