Amid LaLiga's ongoing suspension due to the coronavirus, an FC Barcelona legend has controversially claimed it would only be fair to hand the club the title now, despite the Catalan giants holding only a two-point lead over bitter rivals Real Madrid.
The Spanish top flight is one of the numerous leagues around the world that have been suspended due to the global coronavirus pandemic, with club and league officials uncertain as to when ordinary football activities will resume.
Former Barca star Hristo Stoichkov, winner of the 1994 Ballon d'Or award, believes that the only solution is to end the season now and use the current league table as the final standings for the campaign – a decision that would effectively hand the Blaugrana the league title.
"We don't need fear, but we do need discipline," Stoichkov told Cadena COPE, as translated by the Evening Standard.
"If we look at how the situation is, with the matches that have been played, the fairest thing would be to finish LaLiga as it is.
"Lower down, many could still avoid relegation, there are many games left. So the league could stay as it is, with no team going down and the first two in Segunda (Division) going up to make a league of 22..."
Barca currently hold a two-point lead over rivals Los Blancos after 27 matches played, and any proposal to prematurely conclude the league will almost certainly be met with strong resistance from the Madrid-based outfit.
