FA Cup
Result: Manchester United 1-0 Sheffield United
Date: 09 January 2016
Venue: Old Trafford
Wayne Rooney scored a stoppage-time penalty to earn Manchester United a 1-0 win over Sheffield in their FA Cup third round tie.
Louis Van Gaal made three changes from the side that defeated Swansea in the league, bringing in Matteo Darmian, Borthwick-Jackson and Maroune Fellaini.
Sheffield had the first meaningful opening in the 18th minute when Connor Sammon forced David De Gea into a save with a volley from distance.
That proved to be the only bit of goal-mouth action in the opening 45 minutes and despite the Red Devils seeing most of the ball, they struggled to create any openings in the final third.
The home crowd expressed their disappointment at halftime whistle, as they have now gone into the break scoreless for the 10th straight home game.
The home side were still in control for the opening stages of the second but weren't creating chances and Louis Van Gaal introduced Jesse Lingard and Memphis Depay after 60 minutes.
Memphis had United's first real opening in the 65th minute, as his stinging effort from distance sailed just wide of the upright.
Anthony Martial nearly broke the deadlock in the 86th minute but John Brayford put in superb block to deny the Frenchman from 12-yards out.
However, the Red Devils were handed a lifeline the third minute of stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty, which Wayne Rooney stepped up to convert.
Van Gaal's charges held on for the win, despite a late push from the League One outfit, as they progress to the fourth round of the competition.
