Manchester United advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Derby County at Pride Park.
Juan Mata made a return to the starting line-up for Ander Herrera, while Guillermo Varela replaced the injured Matteo Darmian.
Anthony Martial squandered a chance to hand United the lead after three minutes when he blazed over the crossbar from 12-yards out, after being teed up by Rooney.
United eventually broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, as Rooney collected a pass from Martial, before curling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Derby managed to level matters in the 36th minute, as George Thorne latched onto a pass from Chris Martin, before clinically finishing past David de Gea.
United and Derby entered the halftime break with the score level at 1-1.
Jaun Mata squandered a golden chance to restored United's lead in the 56th minute when headed wide of the upright from six-yards out.
Van Gaal's charges eventually restored their lead 10 minutes later, as Jesse Lingard slipped in a low cross for Daley Blind, who clinically slotted into the bottom corner.
United sealed the win in the 83rd minute, as Martial got to the byline, before teeing up Mata, who fired home into the bottom corner.
