The Reds almost made an explosive start as they came within inches of opening the scoring in the seventh minute. The winger played a one-two and then saw his deflected shot head for goal, but Ryzhikov made a stunning reaction save. Just after the break Jordon Ibe finally broke the deadlock. The 19-year-old sniped towards the middle and got himself into space before directing a shot in off the post. Liverpool came close to their second just before the hour mark as Ibe took a corner kick and Lovren headed it on goal, but Ryzhikov made another clutch save. Another corner from Ibe caused problems for Rubin Kazan when Can latched onto it on the edge of the area, but his shot went straight at the home goalkeeper.
