The Dutch outfit created an opening in the 20th minute after slowly taking control of the tie. Terence Kongolo whipped in the cross and Steven Berghuis looked set to meet it but Marcos Rojo blocked it. The Red Devils came close to breaking the deadlock shortly thereafter. Matteo Darmian made an overlapping run and crossed for Anthony Martial, but his effort at goal inched past the post. Feyenoord were on the attack as Kongolo beat Darmian before sliding a pass to Jens Toornstra, but his shot flew well over the bar. United had a chance on the stroke of half-time when Marcus Rashford knocked a high ball down for Juan Mata, but the Spaniard failed to get to the ball. Both sides were uninspiring after the interval, and only managed a shot at goal in the 57th minute when Karim El Ahmadi sent a harmless effort wide. The clash finally found its opening goal in the 79th minute. Nicolai Jorgensen created the chance as he drove in behind the United defence before teeing up Tonny Vilhena who drilled home the finish to claim victory over United.
