The Reds could have been a goal to the good in the seventh minute when Janker's careless play gave Firmino the ball. Esswein pierced the Liverpool defence and turned his marker to shoot from close range but the goalkeeper parried it away. Daniel Sturridge missed an absolute sitter in the 54th minute when a low cross from James Milner found the striker in the six-yard box. Sturridge directed his close-range strike the wrong side of the post. The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock in the 77th minute. Stafylidis received the ball in the box and curled a close-range strike just past the post. Dong-Won Ji almost made an immediate impact for Augsburg after coming on in the 81st minute as he hit the woodwork six minutes later, but the clash played out to a draw.
