Europa League Report: Villarreal 1-0 Liverpool 28 April 2016

Europa League Result: Villarreal 1-0 Liverpool Date: 28 April 2016 Venue: Camp El Madrigal Villarreal netted a stoppage-time winner to beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday. The visitors had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the sixth minute when an attack down the right flank saw Adam Lallana cross into the centre to find Allen, but his first-time shot was straight at the goalkeeper. At the other end of the pitch Roberto Soldado came close to finding Sevilla's breakthrough. He controlled a quickly-taken set-piece before firing a shot across the face of goal and wide. Simon Mignolet was called upon to keep the scoreline goalless in the 22nd minute. Pina's low strike at goal was stopped by the goalkeeper before a cross was headed clear by Kolo Toure. Shortly before the break Soldado again threatened to open the scoring. Bruno teed up the former Tottenham player with a terrific through-ball, but his curled effort at goal, which had Mignolet beaten, went inches wide of the post. Villarreal should have been in front in the 47th minute as they had another great chance. A pin-point corner kick from Suarez picked out Bakambu, but he directed his bullet header wide from only six yards out. Liverpool came agonisingly close to netting the first goal in the 67th minute when Asenjo made a top save to parry Firmino's shot onto the woodwork. However, it was the Yellow Submarine who nipped in the winner right at the death. A counter attack saw Bruno float a pass to Suarez who squared for Adrian to slot home in stoppage time.
