Europa League Report: Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool 17 March 2016

Europa League Result: Manchester United 1-1 (1-3 agg) Liverpool Date: 17 March 2016 Venue: Old Trafford Liverpool booked their place in the Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday with a 3-1 aggregate win over Manchester United. The Red Devils looked good around the 20-minute mark as they threatened to score on two occasions. The first saw Simon Mignolet parry away Lingard's headed effort before Anthony Martial squandered a chance by skying his shot. David de Gea was called upon to make a big save in the 31st minute. Adam Lallana fed the ball to Coutinho who unleashed a shot at goal, but the Spanish goalkeeper did well to get down low and save. Moments later Manchester United had a penalty. Clyne couldn't keep up with Martial and tripped the Frenchman inside the box. The striker stepped up and slotted it from the spot-kick. The Reds came within inches of levelling matters when a free kick on the edge of the box, at a tight angle, was hit at goal by Daniel Sturridge who saw his shot rattle the crossbar. Liverpool had a great chance to clinch their away goal just when Jordan Henderson powered towards goal and played it on for Coutinho who sent it back towards the captain. However, Henderson curled his effort over the target. Marouane Fellaini did some excellent work to keep a ball in play just before the break, cutting it back from the byline for Rojo to strike, but the Argentine directed his shot off target. The visitors' equaliser arrived on the stroke of half-time. Coutinho produced a stunning solo effort to break through. The Brazilian beat Varela with ease out wide before chipping the ball over De Gea. Martial had a good opening to make it 2-1 when he combined with Lingard before finding himself with space to unload a shot, but his effort from 15 yards was high into the stands.
