Europa League Report: Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United 10 March 2016

Europa League Result: Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United Date: 10 March 2016 Venue: Anfield Liverpool made a positive start to their Europa League last-16 fixture against Manchester United with a 2-0 victory in the first leg on Thursday. The Reds did well in the early stages to put pressure on United but allowed them to gain a foothold in the game around the 15-minute mark. However, Jurgen Klopp's charges were back on the attack again and earned a penalty in the 19th minute when Memphis Depay tripped Daniel Sturridge just inside the box. The striker stepped up and slotted it despite David De Gea's touch. Sturridge continued giving the United defence a hard time as he beat Rojo before crossing for Coutinho who seemed to have a tap-in, but he took it with the wrong foot and De Gea saved. De Gea was called upon again just shy of the interval. Firmino produced a low cross and Adam Lallana directed it goalwards but the Spanish goalkeeper made a fine reaction save. Firmino and Coutinho combined again early in the second half as the former knocked it on for the latter to hit a half-volley, but De Gea made an acrobatic save. The sustained pressure from Liverpool paid off in the 73rd minute as they found their second. Jordan Henderson made progress up the right flank before crossing. Michael Carrick's poor attempted clearance fell for Lallana who set up Firmino for a simple finish.
