Europa League Final Report: Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla 18 May 2016
Europa League final   Resut: Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla   Date: 18 May 2016   Venue: St. Jakob-Park   Sevilla were crowned Europa League champions for the third straight season, after they came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-1 at St. Jakob Park.   The Spanish outfit got off to the better start, but it was the Reds who registered the first shot, with Emre Can forcing Soria into a good stop with a strike from distance.   Soria came to Sevilla's rescue after 25 minutes, as the goalkeeper rushed off his line to deny Daniel Sturridge from close range.   Sevilla then had their first chance in the 31st minute, as Kevin Gameiro's acrobatic effort from 12-yards out sailed just wide of the upright.   Liverpool eventually took three minutes later, as Sturridge fired home a wonderful strike from just inside the box, leaving Soria with no chance.   The score remained 1-0 in favour of the Reds as the sides entered the halftime break.   However, Sevilla leveled matters 19 seconds after the restart, as Mariano did well to evade two challenges before teeing up Gameiro for the simple tap-in.   The defending champions then took the lead in the 64th minute, as Coke curled a fine low effort past Simon Mignolet from 20-yards out, after some impressive build-up play.   Sevilla then grabbed a third goal in the 69th minute, as Coke smashed home from close range for his second of the night, despite protests from the Liverpool players calling for an offside.   Jurgen Klopp threw on Belgian duo, Divock Origi and Christian Benteke, for the final 15 minutes with the hope of reducing the deficit. However, the Reds struggled to carve out a clear-cut opening.   The score remained 3-1 in favour of Unai Emery's charges, who have now won the cup for the third successive campaign and have also qualified for next season's UEFA Champions League.
