Newcastle United have now confirmed the signing of an Italy star for a club-record fee of €70 million (R1.7 billion).

With the Magpies looking to build on an impressive 2022/23 campaign in the Premier League, they have now signed Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.

The 23-year-old's arrival is a statement signing for the Geordie side as they match their club transfer record with the fee they paid for the Lodi native.

The defensive midfielder is now the most expensive Italian footballer of all time, usurping Jorginho's €57 million (R1.1 billion) move from Napoli to Chelsea in 2018.

"First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career," the 14-time Azzurri star said, as per Newcastle's official website.

"I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I'm really excited about playing at St. James' Park, I can't wait to feel the warmth of the fans."

Eddie Howe will lead the English side in their first UEFA Champions League campaign in over 20 years, and with Tonali having helped the Rossoneri reached the past season's semi-finals, the 23-year-old will be a welcomed addition on Tyneside.

"I'm delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United," the English tactician added.

"He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us.

"At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe's top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country."

The €70 million figure Newcastle paid for the Italy international is the same the Premier League outfit paid for Swedish marksman Alexander Isak last season
