Mason Greenwood has reportedly been arrested following allegations of rape and assault that surfaced on Sunday.
The alleged victim of the abuse uploaded photographs and videos to her Instagram account on Sunday morning depicting the results of the reported altercation. It showed her bleeding from her mouth and named Greenwood as the aggressor.
The police went to the alleged victim's Manchester family home to receive a statement, and within hours, confirmed that a man in his 20s had been placed under arrest.
"An investigation was launched and following enquiries, we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning," the police said on Sunday, according to The Independent.
The alleged victim's social media posts showed her to be badly wounded, with bruising on her leg, thigh and eye, anda pciture of her bleeding from her lip.
The woman, who has since deleted the posts, has been applauded for the courage she has shown.
Greenwood's sponsor, Nike, issued a statement saying that it was "deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation".
Manchester United, meanwhile, have suspended the player, who signed an extension with the club in Frberuary last year that keep him at Old Trafford until 2025, from partaking in all first-team activities following the images and footage surfacing on Instagram.
In August 2020, the forward was chosen by Gareth Southgate to represent England and made his debut a month later.
After that debut against Iceland, Greenwood and Phil Foden were caught bringing two models to the team hotel in Reykjavik, and were both sent home due to a violation of COVID-19 quarantine protocols, with the former having not played for the Three Lions since.
