'Lukaku Was My Biggest Problem At Chelsea'

'Lukaku Was My Biggest Problem At Chelsea'

Germany international Timo Werner has surprisingly admitted that Romelu Lukaku quickly became his "biggest problem" after he arrived at Chelsea from Inter Milan.

Off the back of an impressive 2019/20 season with RB Leipzig, Werner arrived at Stamford Bridge to much fanfare, and helped the Blues capture their second UEFA Champions League trophy in his debut campaign with the club.

Along with his 12 goals and 15 assists, the Stuttgart native was a prominent fixture for, first, Frank Lampard and then Thomas Tuchel in the team's starting XI.

Now, the Germany forward has seemingly taken a dig at Tuchel for casting him aside for Lukaku prior to the commencement of the 2021/22 campaign, when the Premier League giants signed the Nerazzurri man for a club-record fee.

"The biggest problem was he [Tuchel] put a striker like Lukaku in front of me in the second season after I won the Champions League by nearly playing every game in the first squad," the 26-year-old told The Sun.

"That was the toughest moment for me, to get a player, a very good player, in front of me for 120 million euros.

"Romelu was a big striker and had to play after costing so much and I didn't feel honoured enough. Maybe that was also a reason why I had ups and downs."

Werner went on to articulate that he felt as though he was treated unfairly by his compatriot after his exploits during his debut season in London.

"I scored the goals and played good games," he added.

"When you come from the kind of success I had in Germany or with Chelsea – playing nearly every game in the first season, winning the Champions League in 2021, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid, making a lot of goals.

"Then all this gets a little bit forgotten by the manager, it was not really fair."
