On Sunday night, it was announced that the 47-year-old tactician had been relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge following their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa this past weekend.
While many had perhaps foreseen Potter's sacking, it came as a complete shock to the Chelsea playing squad, according to The Telegraph.
The defeat to the Villans at home was Potter's 11th loss since taking charge in the English capital, but even after investing heavily in new players over the past two transfer windows and making it known that the Solihull native was a long-term appointment, the Blues' hierarchy seemingly ran out of patience with him.
The same report claims that the players found out via social media, and were stunned when they called their respective agents to confirm the news.
Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley were reportedly the protagonists in taking the decision, with club co-owner Todd Boehly backing it.
The former Brighton Hove Albion manager has become the second Chelsea boss to be given his marching orders this season, after he replaced Thomas Tuchel at the beginning of the campaign.

It is further claimed that the two-time European champions will not have to pay out the remainder of Potter's five-year contract, said to be worth £50 million (R1.1 billion).
