Neymar apologised for his actions against Colombia and left Chile following his four-match ban.
"I have told him to be calm, that there are things to be learnt from all this, to not make the same mistakes that in the end have been harmful to Brazil," Alves said, as quoted by Marca.
Alves also insisted Neymar's four-match ban was too much, and that the 23-year-old didn't deserve such harsh treatment.
"I think that what they have done to him has been too much," he added.
"If it had been another player, it wouldn't have been such a big deal. This is harmful to us; we have lost a man that makes a difference.
"We shouldn't give it so much importance. Football is much more beautiful than this, football is about great moves and goals."
Neymar will now reportdly go on holiday, while Brazil will try to win the Copa America without their superstar.
