English Football League Cup Report: West Ham United 2-1 Chelsea 26 October 2016

English Football League Cup Result: West Ham United 2-1 Chelsea Date: 26 October 2016 Venue: London Stadium West Ham United moved into the English Football League Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over London rivals Chelsea. Despite the Blues gaining the upper hand early in the game, it was the Hammers who broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Mark Noble whipped the ball in after a corner and Cheikhou Kouyate was in position to head home. The hosts were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty a few minutes later. Aaron Cresswell layed the ball off to Dimitri Payet who seemed to have his legs taken before he could shoot, but the referee waved play on. At the other end of the pitch Chelsea forced Darren Randolph into a crucial save as Nathaniel Chalobah fired a shot from the edge of the box, the goalkeeper tipping it over. West Ham had a great chance again as Michail Antonio drove in behind the defence before pulling it back for Manuel Lanzini, but his shot went wide of the goal. Antonio Conte's men should have been level on the stroke of half-time when a quick counter attack saw Oscar play Michy Batshuayi through on goal, but he fired over with just the goalkeeper to beat. Slaven Bilic's side were in control of proceedings early in the second half as Edimilson Fernandes netted their second. The winger cut inside and drilled a low finish beyond Asmir Begovic. The hosts were on the attack again as Payet broke away and found Antonio who teed up Noble, but his shot went just past the far post. Chelsea came within inches of pulling one back in the 81st minute when Diego Costa teed up Eden Hazard, but his shot rattled the bar instead. The away side eventually found their breakthrough in stoppage time when Gary Cahill hit the back of the net, but it was too late to deny the Hammers. Other result: Southampton advanced to the quarterfinal stage after defeating Sunderland 1-0 thanks to Sofiane Boufal's fine strike.
