English Football League Cup Result: Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City Date: 26 October 2016 Venue: Old Trafford Manchester United edged out Manchester City 1-0 in their English Football League Cup clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola's charges made a bright start to the clash as Kelechi Iheanacho was gifted a free header in the box after a terrific delivery from Jesus Navas, but the hosts survived. After a sloppy spell of play from both sides, United came close to opening the scoring in the 37th minute. Luke Shaw played a one-two with Marcus Rashford who cut it back for Paul Pogba. The Frenchman teed up Zlatan Ibrahimovic but he blasted it off target. Ibrahimovic was involved again a few minutes later as he played Rashford in but the English forward took too long and saw his attempt blocked. The Red Devils should have been in front three minutes into the second half. Ibrahimovic made space for himself to play Pogba through on the left, but the attacking midfielder's strike was tipped onto the near post by Willy Caballero. The opener finally arrived in the 54th minute. Ibrahimovic beat Nicolas Otamendi in the air before squaring the ball into the City box for Juan Mata to run onto and finish with confidence. Rashford created a great chance for United to double their lead when he whipped in a cross for Ibrahimovic, but the Swede was unable to adjust his feet in time and saw the chance wasted. Jose Mourinho opted to shut up shop in the last 20 minutes, denying City the opportunity to create chances and moving his side into the last eight of the competition.
