Despite a second half barrage, Chelsea held on for a hard-fought 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers in a second round League Cup tie.
The match started a little slowly with Chelsea struggling to find their rhythm due to Bristol pressing them quickly and harassing their players when on the ball.
Chelsea finally found their footing and opened the scoring in the 29th minute thanks to a goal from Michy Batshuayi after he was set through on goal by Nemanja Matic, 1-0.
The home side were able to double their lead two minutes later when Cesar Azpilicueta played Victor Moses into space and he made not mistake with a clinical finish, 2-0.
Bristol, though, were not going to go down without a fight and pulled a goal back in the 35th minute courtesy of a strike from Peter Hartley, 2-1.
Chelsea reasserted their dominance and their two goal lead four minutes before the break with Michy Batshuayi grabbing his second of the game, 3-1.
Bristol came out firing in the second half and were awarded a penalty in the 48th minute after foul inside the box by Pedro.
Ellis Harrison stepped up for the away side and made no mistake from the spot, 3-2.
Chelsea shut-up shop at the back after that and defended stoutly to hold on for a narrow win despite barrage of attacks from Bristol.
