Capital One Cup

Round Three

Full Time: Liverpool 1-1 Carlisle (Liverpool won 3-2 on penalties)

Date: 23 September 2015

Venue: Anfield

Debutant goalkeeper Adam Bogdan was the hero for Liverpool in their Capital One Cup, Round three tie at Anfield on Wednesday when the Reds beat Carlisle 3-2 on penalties after 120 minutes of footballing action ended 1-1.

The keeper was superb throughout the match, but shone bright in the penalty shoot-out after making three saves to see his side progress into the next round of the cup competition.

The home team started the better of the two sides and had the first shot on goal in the ninth minute when Danny Ings saw his 22-yard thunderbolt superbly saved by the Carlisle keeper.

In the 23rd minute Liverpool made their pressure tell when Ings headed home a left-wing cross from Adam Lallana, 1-0.

The League Two side, though, were not going to go down without a fight and managed to equalise ten minutes after going behind when Ghanaian Derek Asamoah latched onto a through ball from Bastien Hery and made no mistake with just the keeper to beat, 1-1.

Emre Can almost gave Liverpool the lead a minute before the break when his low shot from the edge of the box skimmed the wrong side of the post.

The half ended 1-1.

Five minutes into the second half the Reds had another chance to take the lead when Divock Origi found some space on the edge of the box, but he saw his shot brilliantly palmed over the crossbar by the keeper.

Liverpool continued to push forward, but the Carlisle defence stood firm for the most part and frustrated the home side.

In the 72nd minute Philippe Coutinho tried his luck from distance, but again the League Two keeper was on hand to make the save.

Despite applying constant pressure on the Carlisle goal in the final 15 minutes of regulation time, but they could not find a goal as the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

The game moved into an additional 30 minutes of extra time, but neither side could find the winner as the match ended all-square after 120 minutes of action and moved into the dreaded penalty shootout.

Liverpool goalkeeper Bogdan was the star in the penalty shoot-out, making three saves to see the Red progress into the next round of the Capital One Cup 3-2 on penalties.
