Chelsea's Capital One Cup journey came to an end, as they lost 5-4 on penalties to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Jack Butland came to Stoke's rescue inside the first five minutes, as the young goalkeeper pulled off a fine reflex save to dent Diego Costa from close range.
The Blues came close to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute when Oscar's effort from the edge of the area forced Butland into a stunning finger-tip save.
Stoke nearly took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 25th minute as Marc Muniesa's acrobatic strike sailed inches over the crossbar.
The Blues should have gone ahead in the 28th minute when Baba Rahman played in Ramries, who rounded the goalkeeper, before firing into the side-netting with the goal at his mercy.
Mourinho's side were then dealt a blow a few minutes later when Costa suffered an injury and had to be substituted.
Asmir Begovic came to Chelsea's rescue on the stroke of halftime, as the former Potters shot-stopper pulled off a fine save to deny John Walters from point-blank range.
It was Stoke who took the lead in the 52nd minute, as John Walters collected a pass from Glen Whelan, before unleashing a superb effort past a helpless Begovic.
The Blues nearly hit back after 70 minutes when Kurt Zouma was played through on goal but the defender could only rattle the upright.
Chelsea eventually leveled matters in the first minute of stoppage time, as an un-marked Loic Remy controlled well, before rifling the ball into the top corner from six-yards out.
Stoke were then reduced to 10 men a few moments later when Phil Bardsley was shown his second yellow of the game for a foul on Kennedy.
The game was forced into extra-time and it was Mourinho's men looked the most threatening, as Willian fired inches wide of the upright in the 110th minute.
Neither side could find a winning goal in extra-time and the needed to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
However, it was the Potters who held their nerve to convert all five spot-kics, as Eden Hazard had his finally penalty saved to condemn Chelsea's fate.
