However, Pellegrini was made to rue his decision to start with Silva, as he was taken off midway through the first half with an injury.

City almost leveled matters int he 26th minute, as Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini's attempted block on Stefan Jovetic's effort crashed against the upright.
Newcastle almost added a third just after the 30 minute mark, as Paul Dummet found some space in the box before seeing his effort denied by Caballero.
City looked the likeliest to score in the second half, but it was the visitors who doubled their lead in the 75th minute thanks to a brilliant solo effort from Moussa Sissoko.
Alan Pardew's men survived a late surge from the defending champions, who brought on Sergio Aguero and Jesus Navas, to book their spot in the next round.
