Capital One Cup Final
Result: Liverpool 1 (1)- (3)1 Manchester City
Date: 28 February 2016
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Manchester City were crowned Capital One Cup champions after defeating Liverpool 3-1 on penalties.
The opening exchanges proved to be cagey, with neither side giving anything away.
The first chance of the game arrived in the 22nd minute when Sergio Aguero's close range strike was pushed onto the upright by Simon Mignolet.
Liverpool were then dealt a blow moments later when Sakho had to be replaced, after he had not recovered from an earlier clash of heads with Emre Can.
Neither side could create openings for the remainder of the half, as the tie remained level at the halftime break.
However, City broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half, as Aguero played in Fernandinho, who fired low effort past Mignolet, who should have done better.
Manuel Pellegrini's side should been two goals up in the 59th minute but Raheem Sterling placed his effort wide of the mark from six-yards out.
Sterling squandered another chance in the 80th minute, as the winger's scuffed effort from close range sailing inches wide of the upright.
City were made to rue those misses, as Liverpool leveled matters in the 82nd minute thanks to a composed finish from Coutinho.
The game was forced into extra-time, although neither side could find the break in the 30 minutes added on.
It was City who held their nerve to clinch a 3-1 win in the penalty shoot-out, with Willy Caballero saving two Liverpool spot-kicks.
