The 54-year-old is nearing the expiry of his current deal with the Citizens, and it remains to be seen if he will choose to sign an extension or call time on his illustrious career at the Etihad Stadium.
The club is also unsure as to whether or not he will stay on, but it seems they are not resting on their laurels and are proactively looking for a potential replacement for the Spaniard.
Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has been the most prominent name touted as a potential successor to Guardiola in the blue half of Manchester, with his Portuguese club's current director of football, Hugo Viana, set to become City's new sporting director and could bring his compatriot along with him.
However, a new name has now emerged. According to Sky Sports Germany, the Mancunians are now looking at hiring Xabi Alonso.
Under the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner, Bayer Leverkusen went the entire 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign without losing a single game, but it seems he may not be at the BayArena for much longer as the German champions are understood to be looking for a replacement already despite Alonso's contract running until 2026.
It appears they have come to terms with the fact that it is likely Alonso will leave the club come the end of the season, and are looking at the likes of Sebastian Hoeness and Sandro Wagner to replace the Tolosa native.

The same report claims that the Citizens and Real Madrid are eyeing Alonso as their next manager, but it remains to be seen which, if any, of them is successful in luring him away from Leverkusen.
