FIFA introduced the World Player of the Year award in 1991 to be given to the world's best male player and to rival France Football's Ballon d'Or, which is often referred to as the European Footballer of the Year award and has been handed out since 1956.
Although two awards were handed out between 1991 and 2009 – the FIFA World Player of the Year award as well as the Ballon d'Or – between 2010 and 2015, FIFA and France Football collaborated to produce the so-called FIFA Ballon d'Or, but they ended that partnership ahead of the 2016 awards.
Ever since 2005, both awards were won by the same player, while between 2010 and 2015, only one award was handed out.
Ronaldo, who is the favourite to lift Monday night's so-called 2016 FIFA Best Men's Player award, the successor of the FIFA World Player of the Year was already announced as the 2016 Ballon d'Or winner by France Football in December.
Kaka was the last player other than Ronaldo and Messi to lift the award from FIFA and France Football, while legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho as well as Africa's only winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award are also in this gallery.
