The Portuguese was crowned the 2016 Ballon d'Or winner by France Football, with the award often also being referred to as the European Footballer of the Year – only players plying their trade in Europe can be nominated.
After France Football ended their partnership with FIFA for the well-known FIFA Ballon d'Or award this year, the French publication handed their prize out on Monday, while FIFA will name their 2016 Best Men's Player on 9 January.
The 31-year-old was the favourite for this year's accolade, which was voted for by 173 journalists – one from each country on France Football's voting list. Each of the journalists had three votes and gave five points to his/her favourite, three points to their second choice and one point for their third.
Overall, Ronaldo received an astonishing 745 points, 429 points more than Messi in second place. Antoine Griezmann followed in third with 198 points, ahead of Luis Suarez (91 points) and Neymar (68 points).
Gareth Bale (60 points) is the next Los Blancos star in the final ranking, which means Ronaldo received more voting points than the rest of the top six combined.
Riyad Mahrez was the highest ranked African with 20 points, just ahead of his Leicester City teammate Jamie Vardy, who received 11 points. Pepe and Gianluigi Buffon completed the top 10 with eight points each.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (seven points), Rui Patrico (six points), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (five points), Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba (both four points), Robert Lewandowski (three points), and Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Dimitri Payet (all one point) are the other players who received votes.

Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne, Diego Godin, Gonzalo Higuain, Paolo Dybala, Andres Iniesta, Koke, Hugo Lloris, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Sergio Ramos received zero votes from the selected journalists.
