FIFA have four voting panels (all weighing 25%) to select The Best Men's Player of the Year – national team captains, national team coaches, one media representative per member association as well as fans, who could vote via FIFA's website.
As captains of their respective countries, Ronaldo and Messi themselves had to vote for their favourites, but snubbed each other, voting only for club teammates of theirs.
The Portuguese nominated Gareth Bale as his first choice, selected Luka Modric in second spot and gave Sergio Ramos his third vote. Messi, meanwhile, opted for Luis Suarez as winner ahead of Neymar, and Andres Iniesta in third.
The two superstars, who have been reigning world football for the last nine years, have a history of not picking each other in the FIFA awards.
Meanwhile, South Africa's national team coach and captain did not put forward their vote, while Robert Marawa, who was picked as Mzansi's media representative, opted for Ronaldo in first place, Suarez in second and Messi in third.
