The 40-year-old, who now works as special advisor to Los Blancos president Florentino Perez, believes the Portuguese deserves to lift the individual award after winning the UEFA Champions League and European Championship titles.
"It'd be best if Cristiano Ronaldo retired at Real Madrid and then worked at the club," he told Claro Sports.
"I don't think he's going through a tough spell.
"This year, if I have to choose, I'd pick Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or because of what he's won."
Ronaldo is seen as the favourite to lift the award handed out by France Football in December, while FIFA's new Best Men's Player award could also go to the Portuguese in January.
His namesake also named Real boss Zinedine Zidane as best footballer he has ever played alongside.
"Zidane's the best player I've ever played with," the Brazil legend added.
"As a coach, he is doing a great job and in little time has already won over the respect of the players."
