The international governing body of football, in collaboration with FIFPro World Players' Union, announces a World XI of the best players as voted for by their peers – more than 25 000 voted this year – every year.
On Thursday, the 55 nominees for the 2016 version were revealed, and the final FIFA FIFPro World XI will be announced during the FIFA awards gala in Zurich on 9 January 2017.
However, there are some big omissions among the 55 nominees. For example, Africa's Footballer of the Year, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang does not appear among the 15 nominated forwards.
In addition, Riyad Mahrez, who was instrumental in Leicester City's league title triumph and voted PFA Players' Player of the Year, did was not among the 15 nominated midfielders.
Yaya Toure's omission may not be as shocking as the abovementioned pair, however, as the Manchester City superstar has experienced a tricky 2016 so far.
