The world football body and France Football ended their six-year collaboration to announce the FIFA Ballon d'Or.
While the French publication had already unveiled their 30 nominees for the Ballon d'Or, FIFA revealed their 23-man list for the FIFA Best Men's Player – formerly known as FIFA World Player of the Year – on Friday.
It came as surprise that Africa's Footballer of the Year Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was snubbed for the shortlist of the prestigious award.
The 27-year-old finished the 2015/16 Bundesliga season with 39 goals and started the new campaign with 10 goals in 13 games. However, Aubameyang was surprisingly snubbed for the shortlist, while Riyad Mahrez is the only African among the nominees.
Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller was another massive name, who didn't appear on the FIFA Best Men's Player shortlist.
The Germany international's omission might be more plausible because he failed to score any goals at the 2016 UEFA European Championship title and also struggled in key games for Bayern, missing a crucial penalty as his side got eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.
