In 2022, the London-born attacker decided to change his international eligibility to that of the Super Eagles. Prior to that, he had represented the Three Lions at youth level, from under-19 up to under-21, according to Transfermarkt, but he was yet to represent the senior side.
This was largely due to the instability surrounding his club career. Since making the permanent move from Charlton Athletic to Everton, Lookman had never spent back-to-back full seasons at one football club.
In 2022, while on loan at Leicester City, the forward announced he was making the switch to Nigeria. Later that year, he also made the move to Atalanta, and these two decisions have subsequently given him the platform to become the best African player at the moment.
The 23-capped international has now credited his decision to play for the three-time African champions as the main reason for his rise in the beautiful game.
"I think ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it's been fruitful," Lookman said on SportyTV.
"We've been able to achieve a lot as a team and we're still going as a team. But the camaraderie is something that's very special within the squad.
