Lakay's Pyramids Sack Manager After Al Ahly Loss

Lakay's Pyramids Sack Manager After Al Ahly Loss

Following their 3-0 defeat to Al Ahly, Fagrie Lakay's Pyramids FC are now without a head coach after they sacked their manager.

Messi Sends Message After PSG's Warm Welcome

While the South African attacker has been in fine form for his club so far this season, he was not able to save his manager from being dismissed, with the Egyptian Premier League giants deciding to part ways with Greek tactician Takis Gonias after they were thumped by EPL log leaders Al Ahly on Monday.

With Gonias having returned for a second stint at Pyramids in April 2022 after Ehab Galal left the club to become the Egypt national team's head coach, a brace courtesy of Amr El Solia and an own goal from Ahmed Samy condemned last season's EPL runners-up to their heaviest defeat of the season so far.

The 51-year-old's second spell in charge of the Cairo outfit seemed to be going relatively well as he was able to win 24 of the 39 matches played, but it was this latest loss to the Club of the Century that saw him lose his job.

The Livadia native managed to lead the team to back-to-back Egypt Cup semi-finals, as well as their highest-ever finish in EPL history in the 2021/22 campaign, but they are now seven points off the top of the table, a seemingly unacceptable deficit for the club at this stage of the campaign.

The loss to the record African champions also meant that Lakay was unable to score in a third successive league game, after finding the back of the net against El Dakhila and El Ittihad.

The 25-year-old is the club's joint top goalscorer this season with three goals, and will be hoping his rich vein of form continues under the team's new manager.
