The White Knights are seeking a new tactician after parting ways with Jose Gomes. The Portuguese coach left Cairo to take up a position with Al-Fateh in the Saudi Pro League.
This departure leaves Zamalek without a manager, but a frontrunner appears to have emerged in Josef Zinnbauer.
The German coach recently worked in Saudi Arabia with Al-Wehda but is reportedly eager to return to management following his departure from the Knights of Mecca.
According to Cairo24, Zamalek officials recently held a Zoom meeting with the former Buccaneers boss to discuss his financial requirements and interest in taking up the role.
It remains to be seen whether Zinnbauer will make a dramatic return to North African football, where he enjoyed an unbeaten domestic run last season with Raja Club Athletic.
Zinnbauer is not the only candidate in contention, however. Former Egypt national team boss Héctor Cuper is also reported to have been contacted by the club.
