Ex-Nigeria Boss: NFF Did Not Inform Me Of My Demotion

Recently departed Nigeria head coach Finidi George has made a surprise statement about the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) not informing him of his demotion despite a lengthy meeting with them.

The former Super Eagles winger was officially announced as his nation's permanent head coach in April 2024.

He was confirmed as manager after he had initially taken the job on an interim basis during the March international break following Jose Peseiro's departure from the role.

George's first games in charge of the three-time African champions in an official capacity were against South Africa and Benin in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and after Nigeria failed to win either of those encounters, there were calls for him to be ousted.

The NFF would hold an urgent meeting after the 2-1 loss to the Cheetahs and upon its conclusion, the football body released a statement claiming that a foreign coach would come in as their new technical advisor.

Former Ajax Amsterdam attacker George has since revealed that while he did meet with Nigerian football chiefs, they did not inform him of his demotion, only finding out about it once the aforementioned statement was released.

"They met on Wednesday and took a decision to hire a technical adviser," he told ESPN. "I have no problems with that.

"But we had a three-hour meeting on Thursday, looking back at what happened and talking about the way forward.

"At no point did anybody mention that they are getting a technical adviser.

"I was on my way home and just landed at the airport when I got a call about it. I was so surprised I had to park by the roadside to read about it.

"For two days, I waited to see if they would have the courtesy to inform me, but I did not hear from them. So, I decided to resign."
